Gov’t Reforms -Commission government -A panel of experts used to run the government -Galveston, Texas (1900) -Used commission gov’t to rebuild Galveston -Manager government -New type of local government where a trained professional is hired to help run the government on a daily basis -Better control over public interests -Utilities should publicly owned

Voting Reforms -Direct primaries – enabled voters, instead of political machines, to choose candidates for public office -Initiatives – a bill originated by the people rather than the lawmakers -Referendums – a vote on the initiative by the voters rather than the legislature -Recall – enabled voters to remove public officials from elected positions by forcing them to face another election before the end of their term if enough voters asked for it -Direct election of Senators – 17th Amendment -Adopted in 1913, that provides for the election of U.S. senators by the people rather than by state legislatures -Robert La Follette – “Fighting Bob” -Served 3 terms as governor of Wisconsin, then on to the U.S. Senate -Goal was to drive corporations out of politics

  3. Women’s Rights -More states granting suffrage -Suffrage = right to vote -Organized protests to gain voting rights -Susan B. Anthony – leading proponent of women’s suffrage -Elizabeth Cady Stanton – helped Anthony found the National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) -Lucy Stone – other prominent leader of the movement -Often treated unequally in the economic world -Paid different for the same job -Does it still happen today? -On average, a male high school diploma is worth $700,000 more in a lifetime

Consumer Reforms -Insurance regulations -Zoning laws -Building codes -FDA – US Food and Drug Association Upton Sinclair - “The Jungle” -Meat Inspection Act – dictated strict cleanliness requirements for meatpackers -Pure Food and Drug Act – halted the sale of contaminated foods and medicines and called for truth in labeling

  5. Labor Reforms -Women’s Working Conditions -Oregon v. Muller (1908) -Women required the state’s protection against powerful employers -Limited women’s work day to 10 hours -Workers’ compensation to aid families of workers who were hurt or killed on the job -Limits on child labor -Business hired children because they had small hands and they performed unskilled jobs for lower wages -National Child Labor Committee -Put a maximum hour per work children could work

Other Reforms -Income tax established -Regulation of trusts -By 1900, trusts controlled 4/5 of the industries in the US -Roosevelt administration filed 44 antitrust suits -Sherman Anti-Trust Act -Roosevelt the trustbuster -Northern Securities Company -Prohibition begins – the banning of alcoholic beverages -Carrie Nation – worked for prohibition by walking into saloons, scolding the customers, and using her hatchet to destroy bottles of liquor -WCTU – Woman’s Christian Temperance Union – headed the crusade for prohibition -18th Amendment – established prohibition in the US, repealed by the 21st Amendment -Volstead Act – prohibit consumption and regulate the manufacturing of alcohol
