Learning Development:for students and for staff Teaching and Learning Directorate Awayday 9th April, 2010
Learning Development is unique. We are student facing: • providing a safe space outside programmes to get unbiased and confidential advice • providing expertise and specialist knowledge when the student needs it • close to real student issues, hearing authentic student voices • and, where appropriate, closing the loop by feeding back to staff through formal and informal channels
As a result of attending a tutorial… • 80% say they feel more confident • 90% say there is an improvement in their academic work • They also say: • ‘Knowing that there is someone there who really wants to help and has a wealth of valuable knowledge’ • ‘better grades and better understanding and also I have much more confidence’ • ‘it has given me a real boost to carry on with my studies and I have more confidence when approaching work’
Learning Development is unique. We are staff facing: • designing and disseminating materials and resources for staff use. For example WrAssE and LearnHigher CETL (critical thinking video resource) • sharing expertise to support staff embedding skills for learning in their programmes • facilitating collaboratively designed sessions in programmes for the specific subject, task or assignment • developing our knowledge and expertise through active national and international research and professional networks
A well resourced learning development service: • empowers and inspires learners, boosts student confidence, and demystifies the culture of the academy • improves retention, providing a safety net for those who need it • affords the institution unique insight into the student experience • supports staff through collaborative partnership to improve teaching and learning • engages in primary research; publishes and contributes to the research community and professional networks
