About Myanmar • officially called the Republic of the Union of Myanmar • bordered by – • the People's Republic of China (north) • Laos (east), • Thailand (southeast) • Bangladesh(west) • India (northwest) • with the Andaman Sea to the south and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest. • covers a total land area of 676,577 km2 • estimated population has hit 59. 12 million at the end of 2009

Education Initiatives in Myanmar through ICT • Training Teachers and Technicians for Education through ICT • Two training programmes: Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) and Postgraduate Diploma in Multimedia Arts (PGDMA) • for application of ICT in their teaching and management of the multimedia classrooms in schools • Training in the operation and maintenance of ICT appliance, producing of ICT based learning materials and administration of learning centers • has been provided for Technicians, faculty and high school teachers • Initiating Education through ICT in Schools • 1,712 high schools, 3,099 middle schools and 36,004 primary schools in Myanmar • 991 schools - designated as Multimedia Schools • 238 schools – upgraded as Electronic Learning Centers
Teaching and Learning through ICT in Myanmar Institutions • Distance Learning through E-Education Learning Centers • Online learning through video conferencing system • Course Management System through moodle
Distance Learning through E-Education Learning Centers • two universities for distance education: the Yangon University of Distance Education and the Mandalay University of Distance Education • use several delivery systems, including radio lessons, cassettes, TV programmes and the latest initiative lessons through e-education learning centers. • All the higher educational institutions under Ministry of Education have now received access to Internet. • Yangon Institute of Economic (offers Diploma in Education Management) • respective home institutions and instruction is provided through e-learning.
Online learning through video conferencing system • Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) • responsible for human resource development in Science and Technology • All universities (Technological Universities and Computer Universities) under MOST get Internet access using iPStar Satellite System. • Most of them also upgraded to e-learning through video conferencing system. • Three institutes, under the Ministry of Medicine, Yangon Institute of Medicine I, and Mandalay Institute of Medicine and Magwe Institute of Medicine have video conferencing centers for online learning of some clinical lessons.
Course Management System through moodle • The India-Myanmar Center for Enhancement of Information Technology Skills (IMCEITS) – • established in September 2008 with cooperating by India Government. • Its goal is to provide advance courses in software development and programming. • one of the government’s non-formal ICT training centers which natures post graduate diploma holders in software development. • Course Management System (moodle open-source software) is used for sharing learning materials, submitting student’s assignment, creating or evaluating exam quiz, etc.
Conclusion and Further Issues • The Ministry of Education has been focusing on the application of ICT in learning and teaching in the education sector. • As the use of ICT spreads future in the sector and e-education gains more importance, three keys area need to be focused on. • hardware maintenance • content development • providing training for trainers • Future Issues • to provide students from all the universities for learning through video conferencing system • To provide students from all the universities for learning through video conferencing system • To carry out research and development projects on application of computer in education • provide students from all the universities for learning through video conferencing system • To establish ICT resourced center throughout the country • to provide internet access at these resource centers
