Why look at NGN service architecture? • Characteristics of Next generation transport services • Dynamic • VPNs • Grid service support • NGTN has many similar characteristics and requirements as for traditional NGN • Reuse of architectural patterns • E.g. layering/structuring of functionality • Separation between actors, e.g. Service provider and Network provider • Reuse of functional specifications • Reuse of implementation • Possibly also “reuse” of service platform system instance • Avoiding complex functionality in the Service Edge/PE node WP4 Service platform

NGN Functional building blocks • NASS – Network Attachment Subsystem • Dynamic provision of IP address and other user equipment configuration parameters (e.g. using DHCP) • User authentication, prior or during the IP address allocation procedure • Authorisation of network access, based on user profile • Access network configuration, based on user profile • Location management • IMS – IP Multimedia Subsystem • (Core IMS) supports the provision of SIP-based multimedia services to NGN terminals. It also supports the provision of PSTN/ISDN simulation services • RACS - Resource and Admission Control Sub-System • NGN subsystem, responsible for elements of policy control, resource reservation and admission control. RACS also includes support for Network Address Translator (NAT) and Firewall (FW) traversal • Service Based Local Policy Control: The RACS authorises QoS resources and defines the polices that are enforced by the bearer service network elements.
