Från ”out of print” till evig tillgång? Hur NAI gått från försäljning av tryckta publikationer till elektronisk OA-publicering birgitta.hellmark-lindgren@nai.uu.se
Goals 2009-2011 • Making research and analysis produced by NAI and researchers in its networks visible and accessible to its specific target groups • Providing better and more systematic service to policy makers, media and opinion shapers • Integrating communication in all activities and projects initiated by the NAI • Providing means for bridging the gap between research and policy • Supporting participation of NAI professional staff in the public debate and public dialogue on essential and current issues concerning Africa
How? • Publishing-implementing a new strategy • Web-the hub of communications • Media-a strategic tool for disseminating knowledge • Program activities-stimulating a dialogue
The change of our publishing program. What did we decide? • Co-publish anthologies and monographs with external actors (not in house) • Continue to produce CAI, PD, PN, DP in house • Electronic publishing as default - linked to POD • Electronic publishing in DiVA instead of NAI website • Discontinue the sales of books from NAI • Discontinue marketing from NAI
Why? • Cut costs • Redirect resources along the lines of the new communication strategy (and strategic frame work) • New technological possibilities
Increased downloading 2006 2007 2008 Electronic down loads per month 2.600 4.400 11.213 Visits to NAI website per month (measured in page loads) 60.800 87.900 327.550 Visits to the start page per month (measured in page loads) 7.600 27.600 52.890
The new publishing program • Anthologies and monographs co-published with external publishers: Agreement with ZED Books in UK • Academic articles published in peer-reviewed journals. • In-house publishing will focus on supporting researchers publishing on current African issues with a short-term turnover. • New dissemination strategy
New Dissemination strategies • DiVA linked to POD facilities • Parallell publishing • CD containing full text • selective distribution of hard copies to libraries and universities in Africa. • targeted email information • WEB/Newsletter
