A Dire Situation • Nehemiah 1:1-4 • A new temple but no walls • A metaphor for our spiritual condition
Keys to the Metaphor • Temple = Heart • Jerusalem = Mind • Walls = Relationship with Christ • Stones = Spiritual disciplines • Gates = Eyes, Ears and Mouth • Nehemiah = Jesus and The Word
Build Your Walls, &… • Start with an inspection (2:11-16). • Enlist help (2:17-18). • Be prepared for opposition (2:19-20). • Use the power of a vested interest (3:28-30). • Give your struggles to God (4:4-5) • Post a guard (4:6-9).
…Guard Your Gates! • Be prepared to fight (4:16-18). • Don’t get distracted (6:1-4). • Beware of the Inside Man (6:10-13). • Set gate-keeping rules (7:3). • Don’t let down your guard (13:1-6).
I want you young men to bear in mind that it is the nature of a fire to go out; you must keep it stirred and fed and the ashes removed. ~ General William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army
