Walking Between Two Worlds Linda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN,FAAN Vice President, Nursing and CNO Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity November 14, 2007
Walking Between Two Worlds • The Science of Compassion- Gregg Braden • Ability to transcend polarities while still living within the polarities. • All experience viewed as a journey to knowing self.
One and Only • The ASU experience- first African American student to graduate from nursing school. • Pressure from AA students to choose another major. • Pressure from students and some faculty to “look and act more like us”
One and Only • First AA to hold CNE role at CSMC. • Pressure to “deal with problem employees” vs. “help them understand and values us” • Dealing with the first surprise - each time.
Shoulders to Stand On • Engage the board, staff and the community –help find the common ground. • Mentor frontline staff, middle managers, directors and medical staff on how to navigate the system and thrive!
Shoulders to Stand On • Call the Circle to engage others with similar challenges and opportunities. • Stand on each others shoulders. • Walk between the two worlds on your leadership journey
Walk in both worlds IF • You allow life to show you yourself in new ways so that you may know yourself in those ways……… AND • You reconcile within yourself that which life has shown you….THEN • You become compassion- for self and others.
