Challenges encountered • Establishment of the Board for designing the National Cancer Program (two committees) • Tobacco Law • Administrative Instruction for NCD drafted • Monitoring and evaluation of implementation • Health Promoting Schools • Implementation of HPS Program in 18 schools • Development of school based health promotion and education strategy for 2009-2018 • Health promotion and education part of the school curriculum and extracurricular activities • Improved cross ethnic cooperation in regard to environment and health issues. • Community outreach • Campaigns, production of HPE materials, signing of International Days, civil society involvement Prof.ass.dr Merita Berisha

Main lessons learnt (1) • Although some improvements have been recorded, the health status of the population in Kosovo remains fragile • Environmental pollution in Kosovo poses an increasing health risks for its citizens especially in Mitrovica Municipality • Unhealthy lifestyles are characterised by tobacco and psychoactive substance • High probability of an increased burden of disease from tobacco in the future decades in Kosova Prof.ass.dr Merita Berisha

Main lessons learnt (2) • Health is not seen as a priority • Orientation toward curative medicine, dealing with consequences • In the absence of recognising the importance of health promotion programmes, it is clear that exposure to health risks will remain high • Triangle created from HPS very useful • Evidences from researches and practical use for intervention • Advocacy to decision makers that expenditure now, on effective prevention, will save expenditure later on the effects of tobacco-related morbidity and mortality • Designing appropriate Strategy for HPE and coordination of the activities Prof.ass.dr Merita Berisha
