Prokaryotic cells have a mechanism for division known as binary fission, which consists of the formation of a membrane which divides their cytoplasm in two. The chromosome of prokaryotic cells is a single circular DNA molecule running throughout the cytoplasm. DNA molecule. DNA molecule.

  1. Prokaryotic cells have a mechanism for division known as binary fission, which consists of the formation of a membrane which divides their cytoplasm in two.

  2. The chromosome of prokaryotic cells is a single circular DNA molecule running throughout the cytoplasm. DNA molecule DNA molecule • Replication of the DNA molecule occurs before cell division. Plasma membrane Cell wall DNA molecule formed by replication • The cell increases in size and a cell plate is formed on the inside of the plasma membrane. Each DNA molecule joins at a different point.

  3. The membrane plates pull the DNA molecules apart and separate them. • The membrane keeps growing until complete separation takes place, giving rise to two daughter cells. Daughter cells
