New Members & Last month’s meeting • Another new members has joined - Welcome. • We created a number of self help groups last meeting and they seemed to have been a success – certainly plenty to talk about! Thanks to Anna Thorn. • Any Feedback? - The meeting was felt to have been a success and the June gathering was earmarked as the next session for the self help groups. The problem of contacting other members in the groups was discussed. It would be good to get some contact details on the web but this was still under discussion. Group names were being typed up
Celebration of 10yrs of Thornbury U3A • This event will take place at Marlwood School, Thursday 29th May 2008, between the hours of 10am – 4.00pm. Entry is likely to be £5/head with £3.50 lunch. • The preliminary round of the Quiz is on Friday 16th May. It will be held in the Olveston Parish Hall (virtually in Tockington)starting at 10:30am • We play the “Dancing” team in Round 1; please come and support us!
Gloucester County Records Office Presentation • Gloucester CRO have said that they can give a talk on 21st May but it will be based on the topic “'The Work of Gloucestershire Archives”. • Apparently this will focus on the various services thatthey offer (Searchroom, Collections Management, Collections Care, Learning & Outreach etc) which is different to the presentation given by Vicky at Thornbury Library. However the talk will cover family history. • Is this OK for the talk which will cost £5/head? It was agreed that the presentation should go ahead. It appeared that there was adequate support
Printing your Family Tree • Paul Stannard has had discussions with some local printers who may help us produce our Family Trees and also worked out a way to get sensible sized prints from Thornbury Library. – Paul spoke of his contact with D. Hardwicke’s, 8 Castle St, in Thornbury. They would sell large sheets (A1, A2) of paper for drawing up Family Trees and also copy them. The layout of Family Trees was discussed and also the format for transferring data. • Paul also spoke of the Family History Society day on Sat 27th Sept at the Thornbury Leisure Centre. • Christine Robertson phoned me after the meeting and gave details of the Gloucester Society day on 19th April at the Crypt School, Podsmead Rd, Tuffley, 10am till 4pm. Details on web site www.GFHS.org.uk
Storing Your Family History Data • Anna Thorn will give a talk on how she stores all her Family History without resorting to the use of a computer • I will follow up with how I retain my data on the “Family Historian” database. However we will import data from two other databases – PAF (Personal Ancestral File) & The Master Genealogist.
Future Programme • April’s meeting has been moved to the 4th Wed in the month – April 23rd (St Georges Day). The subject will be “Old Photos”. Will you bring along your old Family History Photos which we will display around the walls. I will have a scanner which we can use to create electronic copies for any one who wants them and also use modern software to remove scratches and blemishes. • May – Another session at Thornbury Library – date to be agreed • May - The presentation by Gloucester GRO • June - Self help Group Discussions • July - Talk by Jane Maw-Cornish about when she could come to the group to talk about 'What she found in the attic' • Aug – No Meeting
