Welcome to the KS2 SATs Parent Information Evening 2015
New format reading test. • Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Test (SPAG) • Possible science sampling tests. • No calculators allowed for maths papers. • A small group of children will be taking the equivalent level 6 tests in the same weeks as the level 3-5 tests.
Reading Tests Level 3-5 1 hour in total. Three texts, not linked by theme. Least demanding text first with following texts increasing in level of difficulty. Children may approach the test as they choose, for example working through one text and answering the questions before moving onto the next text. Level 6 10 minutes reading 50 minutes answering
Spelling, punctuation and grammar This will be the third year that we test in this format.
To gain a level 6 in the spelling, punctuation and grammar test children also need to achieve a level 5 in the level 3-5 paper.
Level 3-5 Punctuation
The levels 3-5 mathematics test consists of: • Two non-calculator papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each lasting 45 minutes. • A mental mathematics test, lasting 20 minutes. • Children’s marks from all three tests are aggregated to calculate their overall mathematics level. • The level 6 mathematics test consists of: • Paper 1 – a non-calculator paper, lasting 30 minutes • Paper 2 – a calculator available paper, lasting 30 minutes • Children’s marks from both tests are aggregated to determine whether they are performing at level 6 in mathematics.
Science Sampling Tests The test will not be taken by whole cohorts. Instead a sample of approximately 9 500 children will be randomly selected, based on five children from 1 900 schools. Schools that are selected have a statutory obligation to participate. Test results will be reported as national data only. No individual school or child will be identified within the data that is published. Results will not be used for school accountability or performance tables and individual results will not be returned to schools or children. We were sampled last year so it is highly unlikely that we will be selected this year. The test consists of three papers. Each will take no longer than 25 minutes to complete. The test will be overseen by external administrators. Information taken from the DfE website March 2014
