  4. LEADERSHIP DEFINED • Leadership is the ability to influence individuals or groups toward the achievement of goals. (Carnegie) • Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. (Unknown) • The definition of leadership is influence (Drucker, 2003) • A practical definition of leadership is a process that will define the future of an organization , aligns people with that vision, and inspires others to make it happen, despite obstacles (Kotter, 1996). • Leadership is the ability to help people and organizations surpass themselves. (Sanborn, 2004) • The definition of leadership is followers. (Napoleon) BOOTSTRAP

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES • Amazing communication skills • Set expectations, listen, feedback • Become a master of change • Earn trust • Build enthusiasm • Get involved – Action speaks louder than words • Know your stuff • Continue to grow and develop • Know yourself! • Ability to motivate people around • Honesty • Visionary outlook • Select a good team • Ability to stand against critics • Consistency BOOTSTRAP

LEADERS BORN OR MADE? • BOTH! • Some have a tendency/talent in “typical” leadership qualities; ie, good communication skills, ambitious, confidence, self-esteem… • Others may not have been “blessed” with certain attributes, but have the opportunity to learn leadership skills – examples. • Everyone has the opportunity to learn to be a leader. BOOTSTRAP

  10. MY TAKE ON IT… • Know yourself FIRST • Then…assess your leadership capabilities/talents • Even more important for bootstrappers • Enhance/cultivate what you do well • Communicate, communicate, communicate • Study/learn leadership! It’s a lifelong journey BOOTSTRAP

  11. TASK COMMENTS / PR • FORMATTING! • Like a resume – if it’s not standardized, tossed away • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE in upper left-hand corner • Reference your website in body of article • Good use of quotes – credibility and more interesting BOOTSTRAP

TASK COMMENTS / PR • The art of the title • Evocative, short, different, interesting, intriguing • Examples • FAQ’s • Answer question directly, THEN discuss • Incorporate as many of the senses as possible • Patrick’s sample of music, Lydia sample of artwork, sample of YouTube the game…GREAT! BOOTSTRAP

  13. TASK COMMENTS : OPERATIONS • Operations is an area not to bootstrap fully • Spending money on more robust systems in the front-end will pay huge dividends down the road. Plus, less headaches! • IS are key systems! • Internet, email server • Data back-up • Customer database • Integration of all functionalities BOOTSTRAP

TASK COMMENTS : OPERATIONS • Determine/create triggers for growth • Customer service, manufacturing volume, etc. • Ex : “…I will hire a full-time CS person at higher volumes..”- what is this volume? Determine it. 35 calls per day? 50? Plan! • DOCUMENT everything! • Enables growth • Least expensive insurance policy BOOTSTRAP

OPEN ISSUES • How to transition leadership from bootstrap stage to growth stage • DELIBERATELY!! • Place in the hands of board, but determine the transition plan TODAY, based on: • Strengths & weaknesses • Effectiveness – turnover, performance, culture • This is SO important. Talk about it today and deliberately plan for a successful transition BOOTSTRAP

  16. FINAL EXAM • Friday, April 27 9:30am – 12:15. Wolf 301. • Expectations • Essay, short answer • Emphasis on the “why” and analysis – support all your decisions and assumptions • Can use a computer to complete • THEN…time to celebrate! BOOTSTRAP
