Lesson 1.7 – The Commutative and Associative Property Write this TITLE down on your notes!!! Lesson 1.7 – The Commutative and Associative Property
Now make sure you copy everything below! Objective - To simplify expressions using commutative and associative properties. Order doesn’t matter! You can flip-flop numbers around an operation. Commutative - Commutative Property of Addition The numbers change places, but the answer is still the same. a + b = b + a 5 + 7 = 7 + 5 10 + 3 = 3 + 10 Commutative Property of Multiplication
Re-grouping is ok! You can re-group numbers together. Associative - Now make sure you copy everything below! Associative Property of Addition The parenthesis change places, but the answer is still the same. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (4 + 2) + 9 = 4 + (2 + 9) Associative Property of Multiplication
Commutative vs. Associative Commutative property of addition Commutative property of multiplication Associative property of addition Associative property of multiplication Choices Identify each property shown below. Comm. Prop. Of Add. 1) 7 + 4 = 4 + 7 Assoc. Prop. Of Mult. 2) Comm. Prop. Of Mult. 3)
Commutative vs. Associative Commutative Associative (2 + 7) + 8 = (7 + 2) + 8 (2 + 7) + 8 = 2 + (7 + 8) Flip-flop Re-group (2 + 7) + 8 = 8 + (2 + 7) Flip-flop Don’t just think it is associative just because you see parenthesis.
Commutative vs. Associative Commutative property of addition Commutative property of multiplication Associative property of addition Associative property of multiplication Choices Identify each property shown below. Comm. Prop. Of Add. 1) (6 + 3) + 1 = (3 + 6) + 1 Assoc. Prop. Of Mult. 2) 3) Comm. Prop. Of Mult.
