  2. Almost all of you own a cell phone, tablet, laptop, mp3 or car. I have one question for you. Do you know where your technology and the materials inside have come from?

  3. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is located in Africa. Africa is estimated to hold 4/5 of the worlds most valuable minerals for the technology age.

  4. The Issue For many electronics to be made valuable minerals are needed called tantalum, gold, wolframite and cassiterite. These minerals store energy that is non-corrosive and safe to use in high voltage capacitors. The issue is to extract these minerals. It is mined and the minerals are bought from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where many peoples lives are put in jeopardy mining these minerals. where there are little to no regulations.

  6. Impacts Today • Has caused 5 million deaths since world war 2 • 300,000 women have been raped • Support rebel groups • Before the mineral arrives in the manufactures hand it is illegally taxed many times supporting rebel groups in the Congo

  7. Future Concerns • That more people in the Congo will turn to the mines as a source of income because of the hard economic times in Africa • Mines will grow larger because the technology industry keeps booming • More rebels getting into illegal taxing in the mining industry

Our Options • Buy minerals from countries that do not support unfair labour (Australia, Canada and US) • Put pressure on manufactures to pay more attention were there resources come from • Which is already being done by activist groups like • The Enough Project • The Conflict Free Tin Initiative • Raise Hope for Congo • Stand Canada

  9. Our Options Continued • Educate consumers on how these minerals are manufactured and effect other countries • Have better enforced regulations in undeveloped countries like the Congo
