“Where the Student designs the plan for change.” Madison High School’s Choice for a Discipline Program GET on T.R.A.c.Thinking responsibly about choices
The purpose of the trac Program • TRACis a discipline program (which encourages the student to think through their own actions), NOT a punishment program (which relies on the teachers and administrators to do the thinking for the student). • For students to discover what respect for self and others looks like, feels like, and sounds like. • To protect the basic rule of any successful educational institution…
…No one may violate the rights of a teacher to teach or a student to learn in a safe and orderly environment.
referable behaviors: • Immediate referral • Defiance/refusal to answer 1st disruption questions • Disruptions: (Any 2 during one class period) • Excessive Talking • Disrespect toward Teacher • Disrespect toward Peers • Making Disruptive Noises • Insubordination (Continuing a behavior after it’s disruptive traits have been explained) • Any other behaviors that disrupt learning
How the tRAC Process works: • After 1st disruption, the teacher will ask: • “What are you doing?” • “What are the rules, or what were you asked to do?” • At this point the process has started! • If the student responds honestly and acknowledges the disruption, and what will happen if another disruption occurs– then… • The process stops and the class resumes.
How the tRAC Process works: • If the student chooses to disrupt a 2nd time: • a referral slip/hall pass to TRAC will be written. • he or she will take their belongings and report directly to the TRAC classroom. • he or she will be responsible for making up any class work missed while in TRAC. • he or she will remain in TRAC (during that period only) until they have completed a student plan for avoiding disruptive behavior in the future.
The Final step to the process: • Once the plan is complete, the student will meet with the teacher to negotiate the plan. • The teacher and student suggest specific strategies to avoid conflicts in the future. • Positive attitudes are important to a successful negotiation. • When both parties are convinced the strategies suggested will work, the student is admitted back in class.
The choice is yours • You can choose to stay in class… • You can choose not to disrupt … • You can choose to respect the rights of others … • You can choose good grades over failure … • You can choose to be in control of your actions … • You can choose to stop blaming others … • You can choose happiness … • OR NOT …
