  2. Parts • Follicle - blood vessels supply nutrients (papilla); sebaceous gland - secretes oil to condition hair • Shaft - made of keratin - strong & flexible

  3. Shaft 3 parts - 1. Cuticle - transparent outer layer; made of overlapping scales; protects inner layers 2. Cortex - largest part; has pigment granules (melanin) 3. Medulla - center; hollow or filled w/ cells

  4. Medulla - can be: absent segmented continuous doubled pigmented or unpigmented
