Community Service By Kevin O’Brien
What is Community Service? • A service performed to benefit the public. • I really enjoyed community service because it made me feel like I was benefiting a lot of people. • I did eighteen hours of community service this semester • I did a total of seven services for the community just this semester
Easter Egg Hunt • My fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and a local sorority, Chi Omega decided that we would put on an Easter Egg hunt for little kids around the Valdosta area. • We bought over four- hundred plastic Easter eggs and five pounds of candy to fill the Easter Eggs with • We hid all four hundred eggs and then let the kids go and find all of them!
Relay for life • Relay for life was a great experience • It was the third time I have participated in it and it is great to see everyone out there supporting the cause against cancer • Two of my brother’s have beaten cancer. • It was great to walk with them for the cause that they overcame!
Luminaries • Everyone could by luminaries and dedicate them • I bought a luminary for my best friend’s mom who had breast cancer • It was great to see how the walkway was lined with so many luminaries
Camping for Cancer • Every year my fraternity does an event called camping for cancer. • We have to active brother’s who both had cancer so it is a very meaningful event we do. • We all camp out in our front yard with our tents and sit around a fire and collect empty cans to donate
Valdosta Water Plant • Valdosta got an incredible amount of rain early in April • My fraternity was just hanging out when we got a phone call saying that the power plant needed volunteers to build a dam to protect the plant • My entire fraternity went out there and built the dam to prevent the plant from damage • We used large amounts of dirt to create the dam and sand bags!
Blood Drive • I had never donated blood before and my fraternity brother, Lawrence Claggett, told me I should go and donate blood with him • I went and donated one pint of blood, it was a very weird feeling • I got my blood donors card in the mail and I was an A positive • I was told my blood saved three lives!
Donated Clothes • Normally every winter my family and I gather clothes and donate them directly to the homeless in downtown Atlanta, this winter I was not able to do so • I went through my closet at school and pulled out clothes that I had that I very wear such as Lacoste shirts and shorts and Polo shirts • I donated them to the Good Will bin over near Hollywood Videos.
Paul Burnette Scholarship • A brother of the Georgia Sigma chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon died in a car accident in 1990. • In his memory a scholarship soccer tournament was started. • I donated $50 dollars to this scholarship • The soccer tournament will be held May 2nd, 2009.
Conclusion • In conclusion I took part in a lot of community service activities. • I felt very good knowing I was benifiting the community by giving back. • It got stressful balancing all of my schoolwork and extra curricular activities with my community service • I learned that I want to continue giving back further on after this class.
