  1. Security Challenges in Geophysical Operations Session Leader: Ian M Threadgold Houston, Texas USA 19 February 2013

  2. Global reach of security issues in GO

  3. The nature of the problem • E&P activities are being and will continue to be conducted in numerous areas where security related risks are present; • Geophysical operations have been conducted for decades and security risks have always existed; • But they seem to be getting more frequent.

  4. In particular • Terrorist activities in the Middle East and South America; • Civil unrest in African countries; • Piracy in Gulf of Guinea and Indian Ocean are growing concerns; • Vandalism and theft is on the rise here in the US – especially along the border of Mexico.

  5. The nature of the problem - continued • Geophysical operations must sometimes be carried out in areas exposed to security related risks of a criminal, civil, tribal political or terrorist nature; • These risks can be regional or location specific and can include mugging, theft, murder, blackmail, extortion, threats, car hi-jacking, kidnapping or piracy; • Fatalities can be in the tens versus single digits.

  6. In Amenas facility - Algeria Google-Earth/Reuters AP

  7. The nature of geophysical operations • Geophysical industry is uniquely exposed within the E&P industry • First in to an area frequently, • Moving operation (not fixed), • Huge footprint (hard to protect), • Remote/isolated, • Easy oil found so clients are moving to more challenging areas where security is a prime concern • With unique exposure comes unique challenges • Logistical, personnel, cultural – also security – Safety, Health, Environmental • These challenges are dynamic, changing, evolving

  8. Session purpose The purpose of this session and the panelists presentations are: • To bring focus to the issue of security within the geophysical industry; • Share experiences (challenges); • Discuss how challenges are being addressed; • Describe how IAGC is addressing security issues and the challenges the geophysical industry are routinely faced with; and, • engage / initiate a dialogue with the audience about this topic and ways IAGC can support member companies in addressing security challenges.

  9. The panelists: • Jonathan Miller – Sr. VP, CGG (a marine example) • Mike Crane – WesternGeco (a land example) • Vicki Huebler – Corporate Director HSE, ION & Chair IAGC Global HSE & Security Steering Committee Houston, Texas USA 19 February 2013
