Update on CHANTI F.Ambrosino, M.B. Brunetti*, F. Canfora*, T. Capussela**, D. Di Filippo, P. Massarotti, M. Napolitano, L. Roscilli, G. Saracino Università degli Studi di Napoli «Federico II» e Sezione INFN, Napoli *Undergraduatestudents **Former KLOE member, new Assegno di Ricerca startedSept 2011
Outline • Reminder • Lessonlearned from prototype • Mechanics of the frame and of the supports • SiPMtesting • FEE and TDAQ • Perspectives
π K Tracker (GTK) CHANTI: purpose and methods • Six “guard rings” to veto K inelastic interactions on GTK-3 (affecting 10-3 of kaons) • Staggered triangular scintillator bars coupled with fast WLS fibers with SiPM readout to form 6 xy planes • G4 simulation: full detector rate O(2 MHz), vetoing efficiency 99% dominated by acceptance
CHANTI: prototype • Built in Naples end of July 2010 • Allbarstested for responsebeforeassemblyusing a b source • Testedusingprototype FEE for MIP response and time resolutionResultsshow O(100) pe/plane and O(1 ns) resolution. Npe
Time resolution ns CHANTI: prototype • Built in Naples end of July 2010 • All bars tested for response before assembly using a b source • Tested using prototype FEE for MIP response and time resolution Results show O(100) pe/plane and O(1 ns) resolution.
CHANTI prototype: lessons • Construction and test of the prototypesmooth and withinexpectations, but… • In the originalsolutionopticalglueusedalso to fixconnectors to the scintillatorbars. Apparently «clean» solution, with possibility to injectglue from below with the connectornotyetglued to the scintillator • Poormechanicalstability, after some handlingconnectors start to unglue • New solutionusing a sligthlymodified bar design, with minimalneed for glue + • + 3M «black» glueusedinstead of opticalone (better)
New mini prototype Built with new technique. Satisfactorymechanicalstability. Nowat LNF for FEE tests
Frame and supports • Frame and suports (also for cables) desingcompleted • Allcomponents for one station built in Napoli’smechanical workshop • Wewill test the frame assoonaswebuildour first station.
The vessel • Preliminary sketch of the vessel done • Contacts with Louvain, technical meeting in Napoli next week to understandconstraints and start the finalization of the design.
Sensors • Wedecided to use Hamamatsu MPPC 13-50 type (1.3 X 1.3 mm^2, 50 mm pixel size) • Alreadybought and deliveredallnecessarysensors + spares (310 pcs)
Knownfeatures • Hamamatsu provides some info for eachdevice. All info isrelated to operationat 25 °C • Vop (a suggestedoperationalbiasvoltage) • Gain @ Vop • 1 pe dark rate @ Vop (typicallyorder 500kHz) • 2 pe dark rate @ Vop (typicallyorder 10 kHz) …butweneed to be able to extrapolate this info atdifferenttemperatures and biasvoltages !
The SiPM test station • Up to 32 sensors can be testedsimultaneously • Temperature stable and controlledwithin 0.1°C • Voltage stability O(10mV), currentsmeasuredbetterthan 1nA
The SiPM test station (Aka «the microwaveoven»…)
Measurements • At fixed temperature I-V curve approximativelydescribed by relation • Used to extractVbd for eachsensor with an automaticfit procedure in LabView • Since gain dependslinearly on Vbias-Vbd the info atVop can be extrapolatedatanyVbiasafterVbdisknown
Temperature dependence • Vbditselfdepends on temperature, and thusif the sensorisnotoperatedat 25°C thiseffect must be corrected • Weperformedmeasurements on 15 sensor of 3 differenttypesatvarioustemperatures • Quitegood «universal» slope of Vbd vs T of about 50 mV/K
Chanti FEE scheme • Re-use LAV ToTboards in a twolevelscheme • CHANTI boards: Set Vbias (mV), FAST amplification, Single chcurrent(nA) , readtempprobes • Design of prototypeboardstartedat LNF CHANTI boards (9X) TOT boards (9X) Vacuum vessel 16 CH 32 CH 16 CH Flange
TDAQ • Currentlyprocured and switched on a TELL1 board • Boughtone TDCB + cables • D. Di Filippo at CERN to start using TEL62 , contribute to the development of the common firmware and be able to design the specific part for CHANTI. • Expectedmanpower from Electronic Service in Napoli in 2012
Perspectives • The mechanical design of the CHANTI station isalmostcompleted. Construction of the first station isstartingtoday. • 3-4 weeks per station needed, includingquality test on each bar • Extensive test after first station construction, thenbuildall detector • Vessel design still to be finalized: first technical meeting next week • SiPM semi automatic test system setup . Allsensorsdelivered by Hamamatsu • FEE schemeagreed with G. Corradi. Prototypeboard in advanced design status. • TDAQ: just starting, butwehave the hardware, (and the people..) • Wewilltry to participate with a CHANTI station to the technicalrun.
