  1. Anthropology: What is Man Like? A Study of the Doctrine of Man

  2. “God designed man for relationship with Him, having a body and an inner personality, but as a son of Adam and by choice man sinned and broke the fellowship. This fellowship is restored in salvation and perfected in Heaven.”

  3. THE CREATION OF MAN • Creation ex-nihilo — God created the world and all that is within from nothing and within six literal 24-hour days. • Atheistic evolution • Theistic evolution — God initiated and supervised the evolutionary process rather than directly creating.

  4. THE CREATION OF MAN:Implications • God is ultimate and all of humanity is dependent on God. • All humanity owes God obedience, loyalty and worship. • Humanity, and all creation, as made by God was entirely good in that original creation. • Humanity, as a part of the creative act, is invested with moral freedom and responsibility. • In creation, there is an equality between the sexes, though a clear distinction of role and responsibility between the two also exists

  5. THE DIGNITY OF MAN • Man is a created being but also has great dignity because he is created in the image of God. • our bodies reflect the power of God • our personalities (i.e., not our “idiosyncracies”) reflect the personhood of God • our responsibilities reflect the authority of God • our morality reflects the attributes and holiness of God • our relationships reflect the unity and fellowship of God within himself and with us • Man is a created being but also has great dignity because he is created with a significant authority. • Man is a created being but also has great dignity because he is created for a great purpose.

  6. THE IMMATERIAL NATURE OF MAN • Dichotomist View — Man is two parts — immaterial and material. • Trichotomist View — Man is a three-part being — body, soul, and spirit. • Multifaceted View — Man is material and immaterial, and the immaterial part of man is comprised of a variety of different facets — soul, spirit, heart, conscience, mind, and will.

  7. THE FALL OF MAN • The temptation was a corruption of God’s word / command (3:1). • The temptation was a question about God’s love. • The temptation was a direct denial of God’s Word (3:4). • The temptation was an appeal to idolatry (3:5). • The temptation included a disregard of the consequences of sin (3:5-6). • The temptation was a twisting of reality (3:6).
