Physical Risks of Sexual Activity • Lesson vocabulary • Sexually transmitted disease-(STD) A disease that is spread from one person to another through sexual contact • HIV-A virus that attacks the body’s immune system and causes AIDS. • AIDS-A deadly disease, caused by HIV, that destroys the body’s ability to fight infection. • Curable-a disease that will go away with treatment • incurable-a disease that will never go away • COPY EACH DEFINITION 1-5 INTO YOUR NOTEBOOK BEHIND THE OBJECTIVE 18 SECTION. • One of every 9 teen girls ages 15-19 becomes pregnant each year. • Over 3 million teens contract STDs each year. • It only takes one sexual encounter to get pregnant or an STD. • You may have an STD and not know it. • Some STDs are NOT curable, and some, like AIDS, can kill you.

  3. Some Common STDs • Gonorrhea • Chlamydia • Genital Herpes • Syphilis • HIV/AIDS • Hepatitis B • Three of the above are incurable. Can you guess which ones?

Did You Know? 1. before a female has her first menstrual period 2. during a female’s menstrual period 3. the first time a person has sexual intercourse 4. even there is withdrawal before ejaculation or the release of semen. • A great deal of incorrect information is spread about sexual activity and pregnancy. • Contrary to what people may tell you, pregnancy can occur: • The only way to completely eliminate the risk of pregnancy is to practice abstinence from sexual intercourse.

Consequences of Teen Parenting For Teen Mothers For teen fathers • Increased likelihood of not finishing high school • Increased likelihood of staying in low income bracket • Higher chance of having a low birth weight baby with developmental and health problems • Dependency on others for financial support • Lack of time to participate in activities with friends • High stress levels • Financial responsibility • May not be able to see child as much as he would like • Forced to provide and needs to alter life plans

How Can It Hurt My Feelings? • Guilt and Regret: • Have been taught it is morally wrong • Goes against religious beliefs • May regret their decision to be sexually active • Self-concept may become damaged • Disappointment when sexual intercourse does not make them feel loved • Sex without intimacy can make teens lose their self-respect, which may lead to more high risk behaviors

Social Issues • Problems with Family Members • Lying or sneaking around in order to cover up sexual activity • Strained relationships with parents or not being trusted • Breakdown of communication • Removal of some freedom and independence • Problems with Friends/Peers • Friends may disapprove • Unwanted reputations • Subject of gossip and rumors • Target of sexual harassment • Sexual activity is expected of them on dates

What is sexual harassment exactly? • How can sexual activity get someone in trouble with the law? • Sexual activity with a minor, even if the person is a willing participant. • Sexual Harassment is illegal • Parents are required by law to protect their children from predators • “Sexting” laws • Not reporting suspected abuse • Date rape Any unwanted or unwelcome sexual attention: Sexual comments, gestures or looks Touching, pinching, grabbing Leaning over or cornering Obscene letters, notes, pictures, graffiti, emails, or texts Pressuring to do something sexual Pestering for dates after being told no Telling sexual jokes Comments about someone’s clothing, body or sexuality
