London 2012 Olympics World Records Gold Medals Should we average times? • Do we count qualifying races against finals times? • Should we average ALL competition times to come up with a “swimmer score”? • Do we assess/record their times during training and practice? • If they bomb a race do we take away medals/records?

  7. How are grades determined? Before: Add EVERYTHING up and divide by the total number of "things" In other words, find the average Now: Use rubrics to describe or summarize performance levels on all summative assessments

Goal • Implement Summit School District’s move toward Standards Based Grading with Class of 2016 at SHS • Mesh Colorado State Standards with International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program • Report and monitor achievement with: • MYP Criterion (4.0 Grade) • State Standards (All assessments) • Clarify and Communicate student learning to stakeholders via reporting processes (Powerschool)

  9. Standards Based Terminology • IBMYP Criterion • Assessment criteria have been established by the IB for all courses in the MYP. All assessments within each course will be based on these assessment criteria (defined by rubrics) All criterion will be reported out on using a 4.0 scale • State Standards • This refers to the published list from CDE of what students are expected to know, understand and be able to do • Rubrics • Tiered sets of performance levels that are used to communicate student progress toward learning objectives.

  10. The Standards Based Classroom Is Not . . . Is . . . • A collection of points averaged at the end • Gotcha! System, looking to find holes in students knowledge and understanding of content • Based on learning goals and performance standards. One score is given for each learning goal (Criterion) • Measured only by achievement. No penalties or bonuses are given. • An ongoing discussion of all aspects of grading with students (allowing for self assessments with both formative and summative assessments helping students find success in the classroom)

  11. The Standards Based Classroom Is Not . . . Is . . . • Made up of arbitrary assignments or busy work to be completed for points • A place where students are penalized for what they don’t know or didn’t do • A classroom where All assessments are linked to State Standards and MYP criterion (achievement only grades) • Students will not be penalized for late work. Only assessed on work submitted • School-wide expectation for: • Due date-Assigned by teacher • Late Deadline-Work must be submitted by end of unit to receive score

Assessment MYP Criterion Colorado State Standards • Criterion A: Content • At the end of the course, students should be able to: • understand and analyze the language, content, structure, meaning and significance of both familiar and previously unseen oral, written and visual texts • understand and apply language A terminology in context • analyze the effects of the author’s choices on an audience • express an informed and independent response to literary and non-literary texts. • Standard 2: Reading for All Purposes • (2.1) Read a wide range of literature (American and world literature) to understand important universal themes and the human experience

Powerschool • Final grade will be based on achievement levels for all course criterion: (dependent on course) • 2013/2014 All MYP courses will have 4 criterion • Achievement level is not averaged (indicator of students progress) • Each criterion will be based off of 4.0 scale • Standards will be assessed using the same rubrics and point scale (same score) • Assignments will be linked to specific MYP criterion and State Standard(s)
