  2. Background • Harold Godwinsen most powerful English family. • William established English policy. • Edward gives crown to Harold. • William declares war for crown.

  3. English Army • Leader Harold Godwinsen . • Mostly professional soldiers. • Dedication to king. • Shield wall.

  4. Norman Army • Leader Duke William ll of Normandy. • 696 ships • 20,000 men • Mostly nobles, mercenaries, men from Normandy. • Best cavalry in Europe.

  5. Preparations • English weak from Vikings and storm • William landed in Penvensy. • English quickly respond.

  6. The Battle • William used archers to weaken enemy. • Infantry and cavalry would then charge. • English shield wall stopped archers. • Williams army began to retreat. • Williams horse was killed. • William lead a counter-attack.

  7. The Battle • Battle began to turn in Williams favor. • English nobles killed. • English scattered and shot with arrows. • Legend says Harold is shot in eye. • Without Harold or nobles English fled.

  8. Aftermath • William waited for submission. • After no success he marched to London. • Dysentery weakened William and army. • William is crowned on Christmas day.

  9. Legacy • Most land was given to Normans. • William gave away land for little cost. • Land owners had to subdue natives. • Conquest of England was easy.
