Uses and meanings of different shots within our short film….

This over the shoulder mirror shot during the dance montage subtly foreshadows the ending of the film. At this point we are unaware that Liv is about to commit several murders, however, the distress as she looks in the mirror hints at Liv having two sides to her. An over the shoulder shot has been used when Liv first hears the noise and phones her friend to connote something mysterious watching her from behind. The angle also allows the phone to be the main focus as it is in the central third of the shot.
We used an birds eye view shot in the Ouija board as it draws the viewers eyes towards the Ouija board as it is central, and makes the movement to each letter very clear. Furthermore, séances are a way of trying to reach the paranormal, something that is often considered to be above us. Therefore, it is as if this paranormal presence is watching down on the Ouija board. This extreme close up of Liv saying ‘Murder’ has been simply used in order to emphasise what Liv is saying. Not only this, but as she is whispering the word it was vital to make sure the movement of her lips was not lost amongst other distractions so that it was fully communicated to the audience.
The series of tracking shots of Liv going to get some drinks have been put together to make it look like the camera has been with her the whole time. The tracking shots also pass where the knives are kept twice, only the second she passes the knives one of them is missing. This is then made clearer in the flashback montage as a close up shot pans across the missing slot in the knife stand. After the second murder the camera slowly tilts up towards Liv’s face. This shot allows the audience to clearly see that her body is clenched up and shaking.
When the mum arrives home a high angle long shot has been used. The high angle connotes how Liv has now got the power over her mum. In comparison to the opening scene where Liv is positioned sitting on a step, lower than her mum who is standing, the mum is now looking more threatened from the camera angle. The use of a long shot also establishes her arrival as you can clearly see her coming through the front door. During the flashback montage a close up of Liv facing front on to the camera is used. This shot makes her seem intimidating by looking straight down the camera, aswell as emphasising and drawing attention to the aggression juxtaposed with the sudden worry, almost innocence on her expression from the close up.
