This lesson aims to help students demonstrate their understanding of simplifying rational expressions by correctly solving problems and scoring on an exit slip. They will simplify fractions with polynomials in the numerator and denominator through factoring for reduction to lowest terms. Assess prior knowledge with a paper-folding activity before engaging in examples and practice problems.

Simplifying Rational Expressions Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of simplifying rational expressions by 1) correctly solving at least 3 of the 4 “you try” problems and 2) scoring at least a 2 on their exit slip.
Standard 12.0 Students simplify fractions with polynomials in the numerator and denominator by factoring both and reducing them to the lowest terms.
Assessing Prior Knowledge • Take out a piece of paper. • Fold it in half. • On the top half, list the steps for factoring when a = 1. • On the bottom half, list the steps for factoring when a ≠ 1.
