Unit 6 Review • Lesson Plans contain key components (objectives, materials, procedure, evaluation, etc.) • It’s important to tap into multiple learning styles & intelligence areas during instruction • Consider diversity in students (beyond cultural-gender, socioeconomic status, exceptionalities, etc.)

  8. Unit 7 Project • 1-2 page essay ORpowerpoint presentation • Create a communication plan between home, school and student. Use the template provided in the instructions to help prepare the powerpoint (if you choose the powerpoint option). • Use references from readings and address the 6 questions noted in project instructions • INCLUDE TITLE and REFERENCES Page

Communication Plan • Who should be included in this plan? • How can you be sure your plan provides frequent updates to all parties? • How can you include positive feedback to parents as well as talk to them about issues that need to be addressed? • As your expectations for and attitudes about students have an influence on their success, how will you be aware of this as you communicate with them? • How can you involve parents in the classroom? • How should your communication plan include your interactions with your supervising teacher?

Seminar Questions • What are some advantages to good communication? • Give some examples of active listening strategies and how they reduce misunderstandings. • Why is it so important to consider confidentiality and professionalism at all times when discussing a student? • What are the important points to remember about communication with your own supervisors?

  11. Unit 7 Overview-Communication • Positive communication-by phone, written, in person, etc. • Six standards developed by National PTA Assoc. for increasing involvement of parents/community • Active Listening takes work, important to develop in education and other areas

Communication ConflictCase #1 • Mr. Munoz sends in a very irate note regarding his 5th grade daughter’s poor performance on her most recent writing assignment • He feels his daughter is being “picked on” and that you and the teacher are not effectively teaching her • He threatens to go to the school board to report your “incompetence.”

Conflict Case #2 • You’re an experienced para who’s been assigned to work with Ms. Snoddgrass’s 1st grade classroom • Ms. Snoddgrass is very negative with the kids, has little patience, virtually no hands-on activities and is very disorganized • You have very different educational philosophies

Communication Case #3 • Only 2 parents came to “Back to School Night” in your 3rd grade class • You notice only a few parents supporting their children in their homework and the children need support • You have to constantly call and write to parents to return requested documents to school (report cards, permission slips, etc.)

Who is your supervisor? • NCLB and Supervision • What kind of support should paras be receiving? • How can you actively seek support & supervision if necessary? • How can you respond to problems/conflicts in supervision?
