  1. Hijacking

  2. Hijacking 0647: The Tower at Sofia’s airport receives a request for an emergency landing from a Turkish airliner which advises that it has been overtaken by “dissidents.” The hijackers are threatening to blow up the aircraft if their demands for release of “political” prisoners in Turkey are not met. The plane’s captain explains that his plane left Frankfurt on its way to Istanbul and has at most fuel for another 1 hour and 45 minutes of flight.

  3. Hijacking — cont’d 0650: Airport officials ask advice for their response. In a phone call, Turkish officials advise the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry that they are reviewing options, but recommend that Bulgaria deny the aircraft permission to land.

  4. Hijacking — cont’d 0659: German officials urgently contact Bulgarian officials. They believe at least 80 Germans are aboard. They urge that the aircraft be permitted to land.

  5. Hijacking — cont’d 0706: Airline captain contacts the control tower in a state of near panic. He states that two hijackers were injured just now and three passengers killed when the passengers attempted to overcome them. He claims that the hijackers now demand firm approval to land in Sofia in the next 15 minutes.

  6. Hijacking — cont’d 0710: Interior Ministry officials explain they will need at least another thirty minutes to determine what capabilities they might have to react.

  7. Hijacking — cont’d 0712: The airline captain advises that he is proceeding on a landing path for Sofia, with landing at approximately 0732. 0716: The airport authorities are in the process of placing trucks on the main runway. Within ten minutes, the runway will be blocked.

  8. Hijacking — cont’d 0720: The airline captain reports only 30 minutes’ fuel. The hijack chief speaks directly with the tower, advising that he will blow the aircraft on the runway shortly after landing with all 181 passengers and crew unless (1) Turkey begins immediately to release 57 prisoners on a list that he will present, (2) Two Bulgarian ministers agree to become hostages as a sign of goodwill, and (3) The plane is refueled and allowed to proceed to a friendly country.

  9. Hijacking — cont’d 0722: Turkey advises that it will not meet the terrorists’ demands. 0724: The Ministry of Interior is told by its German and American contacts that they are prepared to offer “technical help.”
