Objective – What is the KDE? An honorary professional education organization; the purpose is to promote the cause of education by fostering a spirit of fellowship, high standards, and professional ideals among its members. **One of the oldest Educational Honor Societies in the US
The Heart of America Foundation KDE has adopted Lyman Elementary school in Mississippi. We collected books for this school that has been affected by hurricane Katrina.
The Heart of America Foundation • 445 students from grades K-6 • Over 80% of their students are eligible for the free/reduced meal program • 40% are currently reading below grade level due, perhaps, to the lack of age- appropriate reading material • Fewer than 25% have access to home libraries
Buddy Walk • Promoting awareness for Down Syndrome To enhance the quality of life for all individuals with Down syndrome by providing resources and support to those individuals, their families, professionals and the community
Discovery Arts Bring music, art, dance and drama to children with cancer, serious blood disorders and life threatening illness while they are in the hospital receiving treatment. * KDE collects Halloween costumes for children in hospitals
Holiday Cards • Making inspirational holiday cards for students and residents at Matheny medical and education center Premier facility for people of all ages with developmental disabilities. CP, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and Lesch- Nyhan Disease
Last year we had a “Luau Party” for the children of the Hackettstown Big Brother/ Big Sister organization. The students enjoyed an evening of crafts, games, swimming, and creating ice-cream sundaes. Big Brother/ Big Sister…
Big Brother/ Big Sister… • Children learned how to make flower leis, as if they were in Hawaii!
KDE Committees • Publicity – posters, flyers, showcase • Fundraising - $$$! Plan and organize fundraising events • Community Service – Find community service events and organizations for KDE to participate
KDE Committees • Induction Ceremony – Plan the induction ceremony, including securing the location, sending invitations, and keeping track of attendance, ordering/creating ideas, decorations, and chair/table set-up
KDE Committees • Children’s Literacy/ Read Across America Tutoring – Help promote children’s literacy in our community through volunteer work, checking status of tutors, planning events for the community (library use for awareness days)
New = $65 Old = $35 Includes cords for graduation Must earn 20 Points a semester GPA- 3.0 or higher No Dues - - Participation earns you an honorary spot in the KDE! GPA- 3.0 or higher KDE Members-Honorary Members
Points System • Full KDE Members: 20 points to receive cords Honorary Members: Participants will be considered in next year’s officer positions • Your attendance will be recorded at the meetings and activities by KDE officers but keep your own record as well
