Instructions for Part One: Canada’s Mission Goals - Afghanistan • For part one of this assignment use the Canadian Government Website: • Canada In Afghanistan Fill in the slides provided with the information requested in your own words. This is at most a partner (1 or 2 person) assignment! • Each slide will also contain a picture of Canada’s war/mission in Afghanistan which you will provide a link to. • See the example on the title page of this presentation and then ask for help if you do not know how to create links. • You pictures cannot all be from the same site.

Priority Two: Basic Services • How is Canada Providing Help? • Canada hopes to strengthen the governments ability in supplying the Kandahar people with important services and economic growth to develop confidence in their government. • Canada invested 210 million dollars in assisting the Afghan government in building public services such as education, vocational training and roads. • They are also building the economy through the creation of jobs in support of agriculture and entrepreneurs and repairing water availability and infrastructure. • What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? • Canada is hoping the Afghan government will be able to supply key areas of Kandahar with their basic needs. • Canada also hopes that schools will be built, teachers will be trained and infrastructure projects will be completed and implemented. http://www.cfisd.net/newsmedia/press/2007/0921broussard.htm

Signature Project 1 – Dahla Dam and Irrigation System • Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? • This project is important for the people of Afghanistan because it is Afghanistan's second largest dam. Eighty percent of the citizens with Kandahar live along the edges of the Dahla Dam and years of despair have left the dam and irrigation system less functional. By repairing the dam the irrigation system will be able to supply a majority of the Kandahar citizens with a secure water source. • What is Canada doing to help? • Canada is aiding Afghanistan in repairing the Dahla Dam by replacing the generators and water valves, improving water flow. • Canada has also helped in training the farmers of Kandahar in water management and improving their crop technologies. http://www.afghanistan.gc.ca/canada-afghanistan/projects-projets/index.aspx
Signature Project 2 – Education • Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? • By improving the Afghanistan education system the Afghanistan government institution will improve their capacity to deliver basic services, promoting economic growth. Signature Project 3 – Polio Eradication • Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? • By administering the Polio vaccination to over 7 million children within Afghanistan and over 350,000 children in Kandahar the Afghanistan citizens will be able to live healthier lives. This project is seen as the most important project regarding the Afghanistan citizens and Canada's aid because Afghanistan has the highest incident rate of the polio virus.
