  4. III. Circumstances A. John in mid-90’s is a religious prisoner on the Island of Patmos (1:9) under Domitian(81-96 AD) B.Some of the churches were experiencing present or imminent local persecution

  5. IV. Nature of persecution under Domitian: A. Forced worship of himself as deity B. Required people to address him as “Lord and God” C. Picked on Christians in particular D. Localized, not empirewide persecution

  6. V. Purpose: To encourage persecuted churches in Asia to overcome VI. Three-fold type of literature: • A. Apocalyptic1:1 • B. Prophetic1:3 • C. Epistolary1:4, 9; Ch 2 & 3

  7. VII. Nature of apocalyptic literature • A. Meaning: apo/kalupsis • “from”/covered = to uncover • “To reveal that which was previously concealed”

  8. B. General nature: • 1. Literature written to encourage people in times of persecution • 2. Depicts God’s people as suffering unjustly at the hands of the ungodly • 3. Presentsufferings are the setting for a message of futuredeliverance

  9. C. Specific features: • 1. Symbolic language 1:1 • 2. Despair of history • 3. Promise of directdivine intervention • 4. Deliverance at end of time • 5. Heavenly agents (angels, etc.) • 6. Pseudonymous authorship (not in Rev.)

  10. VIII. Interpretation approaches: • A. Preterist: fulfilled in 1st Century destruction of Jerusalem • B. Continuous-historical: fulfilled throughout churchhistory • C. Spiritual: symbolical of triumph of God (good) over Satan (evil) • D. Futurist: everything after 6:1 fulfilled in future at end of age • **Best method: Preterist-Futurist combination
