Brief Introduction on the Middle and Lower Reach RegulationofYangtze River Shiming Yao Changjiang River Water Resources Committee Changjiang River Scientific and Reaearch Institute 2005.08.08
Content • Basic characteristics • Flood prevention projects • River regulation • Structures along the river • Conclusion
Basic characteristics • Yichang station (upstream) Average annual runoff: 451 billion m3 Average annual sediment discharge: 526 million t • Datong station (downstream) Average annual runoff: 901 billion m3 Average annual sediment discharge: 433 million t • River mouth: about 1000 billion m3
Basic characteristics Total catchment area of Yangtze River basin: 1.8 million km2 Upstream: 1 million km2
Flood prevention projects • Building many reservoirs in the main river and tributaries • Levees and bank protection projects • Systematic cutoff projects • Flood diversion and retention works
Flood prevention projects More than 40,000 reservoirs in the Yangtze Basin, including 152 large-scale reservoirs, their total capacity is 119.5 billion m3.
Flood prevention projects • The total length of levees: about 30,000 km • The length of bank failure: about 1500km • The length of bank protection: more than 1300km • The total riprap volume: 91.5 million m3 • Sunken fascine mattress: 5.2 million square meters • The number of groins: 685 • Continuous riprap bank protection is still the main form because it can adapt to bed formation.

Flood prevention projects In the late 1960s,in order to alleviate flood-preventing pressure of Jingjiang great dyke and stabilize the reach of lower Jingjiang, The systematic cutoff projects were carried out This reach is the suspended river Jingjiang Great Dyke
Artificial cutoff of Zhongzhouzi river reach Artificial cutoff of Shangchewan river reach Naturalcutoff of Shatanzi river reach
Flood prevention projects Storage water capacity: 50 billion m3
River regulation • River regulation may be described as the river integrated regulation measures such as river regime control, bank potection, navigation regulation, etc.. Its goals make advantages maximum and make disadvantages minimum.
River regulation • From Chenglingji to estuary, the total reach is basically composed of anabranching reach. So the anabranching reach training is most important component of the middle and lower reach regulation of Yangtze River. • Regulation of the anabranching river---including nodal control, blocking the secondary branch, controlling diversion flow by submerged groin, controlling the river regime by bank protection, island training.
Nanjing reach training The first stage regulation had been completed in 1993. the second regulation is carrying on.
Zhenyang reach training Submerged groin The project controlled the left diversion flow ratio.
Structures along the river • Bridges • pipes and tunnel through the river • harbor and dock • intake mouth
Tunnel Virtual picture This is the first tunnel that will be constructed in the Yangtze River.its top elevation will be determined by evolution analysis and model experiment
Jiujiang dock harbor and dock All harbor and dock construction must consider the influence of fluvial process, because they need guarantee enough water depth for a long time Wuhan harbor
Conclusion • Those contents above-mentioned relate to the river fluvial process and water and sediment movement. Before many projects were carried out, they need to be demonstrated by river fluvial analysis, mathematical and physical modeling experiment, so that those projects have little influence on the reach. At the same time, owing to river alternate scouring and deposition, the safety of those projects need to be studied.
