Washington Irving • Named after the first president, George Washington • Enjoyed the literary societies while he was growing up in New York and practiced law half-heartedly • Sent to England to look after the overseas branch of the family business (failed) • Loved the British literary scene so much that he stayed for 17 years

  4. An International Celebrity • Became America’s first literary international celebrity • The Sketch Book, “Rip Van Winkle,” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” are his legacy

The Story of Rip Van Winkle… • Rip is a friendly, lazy man who is loved by everyone in his Catskill Mountain village…except his wife. • Wife = nagging, overbearing, intrusive, and annoying… Rather -Rather than argue with his wife, Rip leaves home and wanders to…guess where? • Can you think of any modern examples (TV, movies, etc.) of this portrayal of a wife?
