Of electoral collegeHouse of Reps decide • JQA agreed with Clay’s American System • Clay supports JQA & House voted for him • Jacksonians (supporters of Jackson) accused JQA of stealing election • Adams appoints Clay Sec. of State • Jacksonians view this as corrupt bargain and leave Rep. party to form Dem-Rep party

  4. II Jackson’s New Pres. StyleB. Jackson's Spoils System • 1828 campaign= Adam’s (the elitist) v. Jackson (man of humble origins) • Jackson wins by large margin • He announces that his appointees to fed. Jobs would serve max 4 yr. terms • He claimed this would avoid corruption • Spoils system= throwing out former appointees and replacing them w/. Their own friends

  5. III Removal of native Americans • Since the beg., Americans tried to assimilate Nat. Amer. Into European culture • Jackson did not believe this would work • Americans also wanted to expand to land still occupied by Nat. Amer. • Indian Removal Act= gov’t forced Nat. Amer. To move west • Cherokee nation sues in fed. Ct. • Marshall decides they could not sue because they were “domestic dependent nation”

Georgia recognizes rights of Cherokee’s to live in Georgia and gov’t couldn’t invade • “Marshall made his decision, now let him enforce it” • Treaty of Echota= traded land in georgie for land in Oklahoma • Maj. Of Cherokee’s did not agree and refused to leaveUS army forces them out

  7. Trail of Tears= 800 mile journey, mostly made by foot, in which thousands of Cherokee died
