What was Wrong in the Ozarks1999 • Production Base in North Arkansas • Pulp and pine log market South Arkansas • $500/ load in transportation costs • Bad reputation for product quality, landowner attitudes and knowledge • “Sick- Dying Forest in the Ozarks” • Production base managed at 10% to15% of capacity • Utilization for bio energy not a consideration

The Challenge • Change landowners attitudes and improve their forest management knowledge • Demonstrate regional capacity for sustainable production (bio energy plus traditional forest products). • Monitor energy prices and the Energy Bill • Recruit buyers and manufacturers for the Ozarks forest products and by products

  6. 4 year Program: 11 counties (20,000+ owners/2.4 million ac) 66 Forestry Workshops, 9 newsletters 500+ Forest Management Plans (AR Forest Stewardship Program) Plus: Forest landowner surveys and economic study Forestry Conferences Master Tree Farmer and college courses Forestry Professional Training Youth Forestry Activities (4H, FFA, Boy/Girl Scouts) Funding: $600,000 Landowner Education Technical Assistance Program (2001-2005)
