Matter • The amount of stuff in the material.
Mass • the amount of matter in the object • Mass never varies or changes. It remains constant
Example • If you travel to the moon, the amount of matter in your body (your mass) does not change.
Weight • The measure of the force of gravity on you • Mass is not the same as weight
Mass vs. Weight • Unlike weight, mass does not change with location, even when the force of gravity on an object changes.
On the moon you would only weigh one-sixth of your weight on Earth • Weight on moon = .16 x your weight on Earth • Your mass would remain the same
Units of Mass • mg – milligram • g – gram • kg - kilogram
Measuring Mass • A triple beam balance is used to measure mass • Electronic balance
Volume • The amount of space an object occupies
Volume is a property of an object • Solids, liquids and gases all have volume
Liquid Volume • L – litermL – milliliter • Volume of solid objects: cm3 – cubic centimeter
Calculating Volume • Regular Solid Object: • Volume = length x width x height • V= l x w x h • Units: cm x cm x cm = cm3
Liquid Volume • Tool = graduated cylinder
