  3. Jekyll Island Playground of the Rockefellers Jekyll Island is located just off the Georgia coast, approximately midway between Savannah and Jacksonville. A six-mile causeway separates Jekyll from the mainland and the city of Brunswick.   5. Historic Savannah Savannah was established on February 12, 1733 when General James Oglethorpe founded Georgia. The city was named for the Savannah River, a local waterway.
