4th International Southern Ocean Region Panel Meeting Buenos Aires, November 2006
CLIVAR MISSION… “To observe, simulate and predict Earth’s climate system, with a focus on ocean-atmosphere interactions, enabling better understanding of climate variability, predictability and change to the benefit of society and the environment in which we live.”
ICPO: Who are we…? Howard Cattle, Director Valery Detemmerman Funding support Mike Sparrow Southern Ocean region, VACS (Africa) (plus WOCE Atlases, SCAR/SCOR, research) Carlos Ereño VAMOS, AAMP Roberta Boscolo Pacific, Indian, Atlantic Antonio “Nico” Caltabiano GSOP, ETCCDI, Data, Carbon ? Sandy Grapes Admin support, Exchanges New member… Modelling panels plus PAGES
CLIVAR FOCUS…on the Southern Ocean region • Change in Meeting report format • Produce an eye-catching document (newsletter-like) from the presentations etc. at panel meeting. New Scientist level…This would require summary inputs from attendees including a figure if appropriate. Distribution would be largely electronic though printed for ‘developing’ countries. Link to e.g. policy people/ funders…Visibility • Formal meeting report would then cover the action item list, a short summary description of the discussions leading to anaction item, the meeting agenda and list of attendees
SO region panel website… http://www.clivar.org/organization/southern/southern.php
SO region panel website… • What should be changed? • What should be included/removed (best not to have too much!) • E.g. how should observations page be shown/updated? Front page (something more recent? Make Atmos./Cryo. links more obvious?) • Should reflect panel’s direction after this meeting…
Interactions with other panels/programmes etc… “To work in concert with relevant CLIVAR, CliC and SCAR panels (e.g. regional panels, the CLIVAR Global Synthesis and Observations panel) and other groups (e.g. Ocean Observation Panel for Climate, Argo Science Team, SCAR/SCOR Oceanography Expert Group) to integrate Southern Ocean observations with those in neighbouring regions to ensure the objectives of CLIVAR/CliC/SCAR are met and resources are used efficiently.” • E.g. Comment on IGOS-cryosphere draft… • Chapter 11: An integrated and coordinated Observing system • Recommendations (development of Sea Ice Observations)
Next meeting… • May(ish) 2008? • Consider: • Northern Hemisphere • If CLIVAR funds the same amount of meetings in 2008 funds available will be less than for this meeting… • WCRP now carbon offsets its flights. Should try to minimise air miles…
