Reference • A victim of fascism, is a reference to someone who was physically or mentally abused by the government of their country. • The reason why Edith Hahn Beer put this in her memoir, was because she wanted to show that she felt respected by a Nazi unlike all other Jews.
Irony • Page 36, Pepi- “What about Adolph Hitler?” Edith- “Oh, him. He’s not a thinker. He’s just a ranter and raver.” Pepi-“ ‘There may come a time when people cannot tell the difference.” …. Page 37, Edith- “No intelligent person could possibly believe them. Hitler is laughable. He will soon disappear.” • This is important to the story because she is saying that Hitler can’t do it, but he does. And it effects their lives.
Alliteration • Page 37- “The sunsparkled on the spires of churches.” • This is also imagery, but we’ll stick with alliteration (: • This is important to the story because she is describing the scenery that they are standing in while they are talking about Hitler. In that conversation, Werner said that Hitler could get into people’s heads, and Edith said he couldn’t.
Simile • Page 142, Edith- “Poor girl. A friend of my niece Käthe. Sick as a dog. Some kind of stomach trouble.” • This is important to the story because it shows how thoughtful Edith and Pepi truly were throughout the story. I imagine they were really this way too (considering it’s a memoir). ps- the background picture is the Star of David made out of hearts…
Imagery • Page 191- “To make me feel welcome, he decided to decorate the colorless apartment by painting all around the living room a mural on the wooden section of the wall.” • This is important to the story because they are a serious couple, in love, and planning to start a family. At this point in the story, they were exploring their new apartment that Werner had done for Edith.
