  2. Simile Quote: “It was clean and not wet and smelly like my old one.” (chap. 5 pg. 42) This is comparing Keziah’s new pallet to her old one. It also shows an example of the special treatment her and Obour got while on board the slave ship.

  3. Irony Quote: “It was the only weapon he had.” (chap. 14 pg. 113) Nathaniel’s weapon was anger. It was used to save instead of kill like a normal weapon.

  4. Simile Quote: “I felt like my mother” (chap. 3 pg. 23) Phillis is pouring water into a fountain like her mother used to do so, she feels like her mother right now. This makes her feel strong and becalmed.

  5. Simile Quote: “And I let the thoughts pour into it, like water into the fountain.” (chap. 3 pg. 23) Phillis is talking about her mind. She is comparing the water pouring into the fountain to the thoughts pouring into her mind. This let’s you understand how she feels.

  6. Hyperbole Quote: “She washed away all her meanness, of course, when her mother was in view.” (chap. 7 pg. 57) Mary was a mean and sneaky girl who was one person when her mother was around and whole different person when she wasn’t around. Mary even struck Phillis one time when her mother wasn’t around even though her mother made a rule against striking slaves.

  7. Simile Quote: “She’s as strong as an ox, that girl” (chap. 14 pg. 113) Sulie was inoculated with little or no affliction at all. So, because she was not really affected by the inoculation she is compared to an ox’s strength.

  8. Hyperbole Quote: “The vaulted blue sky seemed to explode above me” (chap. 14 pg. 113) Phillis just was cured from her fever and was imagining things during this time. She started to talk about them and then Nathaniel explained to her that she just conjured them. After this a light bulb came in Phillis’s head and she explained it as the vaulted blue sky exploding at her.

  9. Personification Quote: “His voice had a deadness to it.” (chap. 31 pg. 238) A voice can’t really be dead. Nathaniel was upset with Phillis because he believed Phillis had disgraced him that night.

  10. Simile Quote: “My hair is like wire” (chap. 31 pg. 238) Phillis is talking to Nathaniel. She is listing all her imperfections.

  11. Personification Quote: “… the cold wind howled outside” (chap. 10 pg. 77) Phillis is describing the setting when Reverend Lathrop walked into their house. The wind can not literally howl.
