TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine Redundant Power supply (DQLPUR) & interface Module (DQLIM) assembling during LS1 J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • Why we do it during LS1 • Activity description • DQLPURs and the necessary resources • DQLIM required Resources • Showstoppers & Conclusion J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 Why we do it during LS1 TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • The physical state of the heater strips installed in the dipole magnets is unknown! They may have been damaged (partly cut) during the collaring process (when the main magnets where assembled in the factory). And the temperature cycles of the LHC machine (cool downs & warm-ups) may have increase de cut! • This uncontrolled cut can potentially give us a short : • - Between the heater strip and the Earth • - Between the 13 kA circuit and the Earth (magnet should be replaced). • That is why a heater strip diagnostic function has to be implemented as soon as possible(LS1) J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 Activity description TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • For this heaters strip diagnostic, It was decide to add a measurement of the DQHDS discharge current with the help of 4 current measurement transformers. • We need a place to put those current transformers • The new electronics which will treat these new information (installed in the nDQLPU, MPE/EP side) needs to be powered • We need a new power supply • We will profit to add: • - A mains power redundancy (UPS1/UPS2) • - An increased reliability (with a linear power supplies design instead of the actual switch mode design) J. DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 Activity description (2) TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • In the MPE/EE side, we have to prepare: • 2700 DQLPUR • (2464 in the LHC tunnel) • 1300 DQLIM • (1232 in the LHC tunnel) J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012 Courtesy of J.M Wickham
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 DQLPURs and the necessary resources TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • - To complete de the design we need help from: • MPE/EM (new PCBs version necessary) • Steve Pemberton and EPC team (powering test) • - The 2700 units will be assembled and tested in the industry, the MS3911 market survey was launched to find a company able to build these units. • We are actually thinking on the possibility of buying (by Cern means) the most expensive parts of the unit (toroid transformer, metallic case, heat sink) and supply these parts to the company chosen to assemble the units. • Cern people: Purchasing service, myself,… • We have to build a test bench to send it to the chosen company for the test the 2700 DQLPURs. Hardware and software required • ZinurCharifoulline (for software), Mathieu Favre (hardware) J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 DQLIM required Resources (1) TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • - To complete de the design we need help from: • MPE/EM (jean Mark Wickham as almost finished the PCB drawing for the first DQLIM prototype, a second version of PCBs will probably be necessary at the beginning of the next year ) • The 1300 units will be assembled and tested at CERN • We have to buy all the components (mechanical parts, connectors, PCBs,…) • Cern people: Purchasing service, MPE/EM ,myself,… J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 DQLIM required Resources(2) TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • Once the DYPB rack are at the surface, we need to recuperate the following items from the old Crawford box: • 4 “DQHDS discharge” cables (connector + cable) • 4 “DQHDS Monitor” (connector + cable) • 4 “DQHDS 230V” (connector + cable) • 1 ”Magnet VTAP” (connector + cable) • 1 “magnet” harting connector • 5 cable pass • This job will be done by a team of • 4 people coming from Cracow • (AGH university) during 4 month (starting in Mai) • Remark: R.I.P. old Crawford boxes! We reached the no return point (to the present LHC configuration )! • Add a connector on one side of the above cables(marked in red) • MPE/EM or … J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 DQLIM required Resources(3) TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • Wave soldering of the two sorts of PCBs (we have to supplies all de components that should be mounted on the boards) • Industry • Assembling of the 1300 DQLIM crates • Assembling the mechanical parts of the box • Mounting of connectors, transformers, and PCBs in the crate • Preparation of the internal cables and internal wiring of the DQLIM • MPE/EM J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012 Courtesy of J.M Wickham
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 DQLIM required Resources(4) TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • Test the internal wiring of all the DQLIM crates (with MCT 192 cable tester + adaptor cables) • MPE/EE Mathieu Favre (tester preparation) • MPE/EE (to perform the tests) • Insert and wiring 1300 DQLIM crates in the DYPBs racks • A team of 4 people (AGH university) J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 DQLIM required Resources(5) TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • Functional test of the full DYPB racks (including our power cycle function) • MPE/EP & MPE/EE • Insulation test of the full DYPB racks • MPE/EP & MPE/EE J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
DQLPUR & DQLIM assembling during LS1 Showstoper & Conclusion TE/MPE/EE LHC Machine • Potential showstoppers or warning ? • Parts definition (measurement transformer) • Purchasing times (big amounts of money in our orders) • Parts delivery time • Underestimation of the work to be done! (& required time) • Conclusion • A lot of work! He should not loose our time! J. Mourao T/MPE/EE 23 December 2012
