DSDC • Established 1989 • Dementia Services Development Trust • Dept. of Applied Social Sciences at University of Stirling • Aims - to extend and improve services to people with dementia and their carers by providing: • Information • Training & Education • Research & Consultancy • Publications • Conferences

  4. The Iris Murdoch Building • Purpose-built, opened in 2002 • Design exemplar for dementia-friendly public buildings

  5. Dementia-friendly design • Provides an environment that compensates for the disabilities of dementia • Celebrates the creativity of people with dementia

  6. Dementia-friendly design The disabilities of dementia usually include • Impaired memory • Impaired learning • Impaired reasoning • High levels of stress • Difficulty adjusting to the sensory/mobility impairment of normal ageing

  7. Dementia-friendly design should: • Make crucial information obvious • Conceal the unnecessary • Offer multiple cues • Make recognisable/familiar a key principle • Use high levels of visibility • Preserve identity/stimulate memory
