CWB and AFWA project 2010 Input GPSRO data tests with WRFDA Yong-Run Guo NCAR/MMM, 12 November 2010
Different GPSRO input format to WRFDA wetPfr (netCDF) => profile_LITTLE_R (CWB OP211) 100 m vertical resolution, profile by profile bfrPrf (BUFR) => profile_LITTLE_R (NCAR) about 200 m vertical resolution, profile by profile bfrPrf (BUFR) => one_level_per_record LITTLE_R (GSI BUFR) about 200 m vertical resolution, level by level, Considering the ray-smearing Case: 2009060818Z WRFDA with H-correction+P-perturbation-off Assimilation of GPSRO data only
wetPrf (OP211) and BUFR (NCAR) bfrPrf wetPrf bfrPrf - wetPrf Max and min increments at h = 0.55
Remarks • There are differences in all of the analysis increment fields. • The biggest differences are in the moisture increments field over tropic area. • wetPrf data and bfrPrf data have not only the different vertical resolutions but also the different height levels.
bfrPrf profile (upright) and single levels (ray-smearing) bfrPrf_1LVL bfrPrf bfrPrf_1LVL-bfrPrf Max and min increments at h = 0.55
Remarks • There are differences in all of the analysis increment fields. • The biggest differences are in the temperature in north of the Tibetan plateau. The differences of the moisture increments field located in Yunnan province of China. • bfrPrf “one_level_per_record” and “profile” data not only consider the ray-smearing but also have the different QC procedure. Later has Poli’s check in QC, but former does not. • If CWB has the manpower available, it may be worth to conduct more tests.
