PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE AND BEYOND • Teachers and counselors work hand in hand to help students meet the demands of the twenty-first century • Students create Student Success Plan with counselor at end of 1st semester of grade 9 • Annually student and counselor reviews Student Success Plan and: • Student grades and course selections • Desired career path based on career exploration surveys: Choices Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) • How students can challenge themselves and still be successful • Evening presentation for parents and students “Planning for Your Future; Graduating with a Plan”
PREPARING STUDENTS CON’T… • Our Board of Education graduation requirements include academic, applied education and fine arts courses • Students are encouraged to explore new areas of study and enrichment courses including: college partnership courses, performing and visual arts courses • Juniors are provided the opportunity to take the Accuplacer placement test to determine academic strengths and weaknesses. Students are provided with the resources to improve their skills
Course Selection Process • Teachers make course recommendations for the upcoming year on the semester one report card • Students receive a course selection form to complete • Students meet individually with counselors to review and select courses for the upcoming year • With the counselor, students review required grades and prerequisites for selected classes and check that graduation requirements are being met • Students who wish to take a course for which they have not received a recommendation must conference with the teacher to discuss the skills needed to be successful in the desired course and outline the goals • If a student fulfills the goals outlined by the teacher by the end of the school year, the recommendation will be changed
