What systems are approved for tinting? • * UCD PS Line (Chromaflo Technologies) • * UCD V Line (Chromaflo Technologies) • * Colortrend 844 Colorants (Chromaflo Technologies) • * Colortrend 888 Colorants (Chromaflo Technologies) • The following attachment opens a complete list of colorants sku’s and appropriate tint base colorant max amounts. Please open for the most active sku’s on March 1, 2013.
Approved tint lines • UCD PS line is a special colorant family specifically designed to work with the Polysiloxane resin that is in PX700 and PXONE. This colorant system is considered to be 100% solids therefore VOC compliant. • This system is measured utilizing a 48ths shot size value while tinting the following items. • Please refer to attachment on Slide #4 for active sku’s. • *The UCD PS line is the ONLY approved colorant for the PX700 and PXONE products. Using other colorants will diminish the performance of PSX 700 and PSX One.
Approved tint lines • UCD V line is a universalsolvent based acrylic colorant. This system is measured utilizing a 64ths shot size value. • Please refer to attachment on Slide #4 for active sku’s. • Note: This system is not a direct replacement for the Colortrend 844 line (formulas will not have the same paste/colorant amounts). • *The UCD V-Line colorants can be utilized to tint the following product lines: • * Amerlock 2/400 (VOC and std), • * Amershield (VOC and std), • * Amercoat 450H, 450SG, 450HS, • * AT5450, AT5420, PS1001, AT229
Approved tint lines • Colortrend 844 line is another universalsolvent based acrylic colorant. This system is measured utilizing a 48ths shot size value, or in some instances 64ths.* • Since this can be seen in the field under both the 48th and 64th shot sizes individuals that utilize this colorants will have to make sure they are utilizing the appropriate formula book. • Please refer to attachment on Slide #4 for active sku’s. • Note: Colortrend 844 and the UCD V line colorants ARE NOT interchangeable (formulas will not have the same paste/colorant amounts). • *This colorant lineup can be utilized to tint the following product lines: • * Amerlock 2/400 (VOC and NON VOC), • * Amershield (VOC and NON VOC), • * Amercoat 450H, 450SG, 450HS, • * AT5450, AT5420, PS1001, AT229
Approved tint lines • Colortrend 888 is a generic waterborne tint line. This system is measured utilizing a 48ths shot size value. • Note: This system is not a direct offset to the Colortrend 896 line (formulas will not have the same paste/colorant amounts). This system is also not a direct offset to the 96 Line from AF (formulas will not have the same paste/colorant amounts). Neither the 896 lineup nor the 96 lineup should be utilized in this product. • *This colorant lineup can be utilized to tint the following product lines: • * AT220P, AT335
So with the four approved tint series, • who uses what and how do I get them? • All PMC warehouse locations / consignment locations use the UCD V line and UCD PS line. Only the La Porte and Chino locations tint with the Colortrend 888 as well. • The Colortrend 844 colorants are used mostly at PMC Dealers / Independent Reps, PPG AF local stores, Refinish Dealers / Jobbers. • Why does PMC utilize the UCD V line over the 844 colorants? • Price per gallon is significantly lower for equivalent product, and with an approximate 250K tinted gallons per year it adds up fast. • PMC business unit has utilized this since the early 90’s and have over 16K verified formulas vs. the <6K unverified archived formulas in the 844 colorants (formulas completed by the supplier at the time, not PMC). • All colorant paste should be ordered directly from the supplier / CSR (AF). Their contact information is Chromaflo Technologies at 1-800-776-3329.
The following colorants ARE NOT approved for use in Amercoat products: • 4257 Colorants made by AF • 96 Colorants made by the AF • HPC Colorants made by the AF • 896 Colorants (Chromaflo Technologies) • CPS Colorants (made by PPG Refinish)
Unapproved tint lines PMC will not give a warranty with any paint that is tinted with these lines (even though the customers may tell us they have been doing it for years). The responsibility of using the correct tint line lies directly on the tinting location, and any cost incurred to fix a problem resulting from use of the wrong tint will be at their expense. Our PMC labs can analyze to determine what is in the paint regardless if wet or dry.
Unapproved Practices • Tinting a non tint base factory scratch batch such as AT370 to another color other than what is in the can. • Tinting a “-3” pure white color to achieve better hiding over to a tinted color. These products are not color controlled nor tint strength controlled like the tint bases. • Over tinting a tint base with too much colorant (please see slide 4 attachment for max colorant levels). • Using any UCD PS colorant that is not on the active sku’s list (please see slide 4 attachment for list) • Tinting a color and not checking it mixed with the cure for verification. AK2/400 is the worst since the cure is brown.
Common mistakes when placing orders on tinted colors • Placing an order through customer service and expecting it to go out the same day against a warehouse that has never tinted it before. Warehouses must have the color standard to verify color before shipping. • Supplying an 844 custom formulation to the CSR’s for order through the PMC Warehouses. Since the 844 colorants are not utilized they can’t tint to these custom formulas developed at stores / dealers. • Asking a warehouse to tint products that they can’t tint at their location.
