What is Unified Sports? • A program that combines approximately equal number of Special Olympic athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities on sports teams for training and competition. • In Frederick County we have a sport for each sports season – Fall-Tennis Winter-Bocce and Spring-Track and Field • The unified program is sponsored by Special Olympics of Maryland…for more information on this great organization visit their website www.somd.org

  4. Different Roles • Team Members: There are 2 teams of 8 and 2 alternate players • Assistants: Helps the team with set up, warm ups, learning the game, and scoring. • Officials: Trained to officiate matches and help during practices.

  5. What is Bocce? • Bocce is an ancient game that is played worldwide and the current game that we play is from Italy. It is similar to bowling. • We will teach your son or daughter the rules of the game, the skills needed to play and different strategies to help them compete at a high level. • This is an outstanding sport that they will be able to play the rest of their lives.

Practice Schedule: 2:30 – 3:30 Jan 5 Jan 10 Jan 12 Jan 17 Jan 19 Jan 24 Jan 31 Feb 7 Feb 14 Feb 16 Practices held in main stairwell in OHS. *Note- If school is closed there will be no practice Match Schedule Jan 26th Dual Match Tuscarora hosts Oakdale February 2nd Dual Match Oakdale hosts Urbana February 9th Dual Match Oakdale hosts GTJHS February 13th FCPS Unified Bocce Tournament @ Urbana Week of February 20th State Unified Bocce Tournament (over 2 days) * Transportation is provided for all away matches.   8. Paperwork • We need all paperwork back ASAP Last possible day is Friday, Jan 6, 2011 Physicals: If student participated in Unified Tennis in fall they do not need to fill out paperwork or if they were on a fall sports team only the Special Olympic form needs to be completed.

  9. Uniform for Matches • Team Poloshirt (will be issued prior to 1st match) • At matches, students must wear pants or shorts (dark or khaki are acceptable) • NO Jeans or Dress pants. • Athletic footwear (no flip flops)

  10. Fundraisers Frigid Friday Plunge Friday January 27th 2011 @ Sandy Point State Park-Students can earn student service hours by being apart of this great event. Proceeds from this event go to Special Olympics and to Frederick County Unified Sports. If we raise $3000 as a school we will have bus transportation to the event. Our goal would be over 45 students-raise $50.00 to $100.00 per student.   12. Expectations of Bocce Athletes Players are expected to: • Be at all practices and matches Make sure to contact a coach prior to missing a practice or match. • Be a positive influence as a teammate, student and member of the OHS community. • Always give your best effort.
