Two Versions First Version • God of the Sea (Neptune) his father, mother is the great huntress Queen Euryale of the Amazons • A small scorpion stung him with its stinger and killed him with its poison
Two Versions Continued 2nd Version • Was a gift from Jupiter , Neptune, and Mercury to a pious peasant • Was a skilled blacksmith and said to have fabricated Vulcan’s underground palace • Built a Temple to the gods in Sicily • Orion fell in love with Merope, daughter of Oeonpion and princess of Chios
Two Versions Continued 2nd Version • Angered, Orion tried to take away Merope with force • After all of this, he dwelt with Diana and became a favorite of hers • It was said that Diana was planning to marry him • Apollo was upset and told her she shouldn’t as Diana was supposed to be a maiden goddess • Apollo saw his chance when he saw Orion swimming at the far end of a lake with only his head visible, Apollo challenged his sister saying she could not hit the small black object in the water • Diana shot her arrow with deadly accuracy and Orion was dead
