Positive/Negative Effects of Solar Wind Density on Auroral Electrojets • RU (RL) is the rate of change of the AU (AL) index per unit solar wind density. • The rates are small for northward IMF. As the southward IMF becomes larger, the distribution bifurcates. • These results indicate that the enhanced solar wind density not only can increase (blue pluses) but also can decrease (red pluses) the auroral electrojets.
An Example of Negative Effects • The absolute values of the AU and AL indices change negatively with the solar wind density in Interval I (red curves). • For interpretation, we suggest that a compression may stretch the magnetotail [Wing and Sibeck, 1997] and counteract the dipolarization process of a substorm, reducing the energy release into the ionosphere.
