  1. Pendulum Investigation 08.31.12

  2. Lab Report FormatCopy for Warm-up • Testable Question • Background Information/Research • Hypothesis • Materials • Variables and Controls • Procedure • Safety • Results • Conclusion

  3. Testable Questions • How is the period of a pendulum effected by length? • How is the period of a pendulum effected by mass? • How is the period of a pendulum effected by release angle?

  4. Background Information • Pendulum – body mounted so it swings freely with gravity • Period – time for pendulum to complete 1 swing • Simulation

  5. Materials • Fishing line • Rubber stoppers • Protractor • Stopwatch • Meterstick • Balance • Tape

  6. Safety • Basic laboratory safety • No specific issues

  7. In lab groups… • Write a detailed procedure for one testable question • Identify the variables and controls for one testable question • Create data table(s)

  8. Warm-up What factors should be considered when designing the pendulum investigation?

  9. 7th period warm-up • What are the last two sections of a lab report?

  10. Seventh period • Complete investigation plan up to and including procedure. • 10 minutes • Work with person sitting next to you. • Check with Mr. Founds if time permits

  11. After collecting data… • Create graph displaying data • Write conclusion in paragraph format. Include: • Restate testable question • Summarize procedure • Summarize data • Evaluate hypothesis • Suggest improvements • Suggest further investigations

  12. Conclusion • In paragraph format… • What were you testing? (testable question) • How did you complete your test? (procedure) • What were the results? (graph) • How could the investigation be improved?

  13. Warm-up Why is the pendulum lab considered a controlled scientific investigation?

  14. Science Warm-up • What are some challenges that your group has faced so far with the pendulum investigation?

  15. 7th period warm-up • In the investigation you designed yesterday, what was your independent variable? • For the pendulum lab, why is having ONLY ONE independent variable important?

  16. Procedure • Choose what to test (length, mass, or angle) • Select 3 different variables • Complete 3 trials for each variable • Keep all other factors the same • Complete table • Graph data • Write conclusion

  17. Before you begin • On a piece of scrap paper… • What is your IV? • What is your DV? • Why are we doing multiple trials? • What do you do after collecting data?
