Current Events Presentation:Aristotle By Juan Maciel Period 10
Background • He was born in Stagira, which is located in Northern Greece. • He lived from 384 to 322 BC. • He was the best student come out of The Academy, which was a school designed by Plato. • He studied here for 20 years of his life. • He later started his own school in Athens called the Lyceum.
Contribution to Math • He created a method of deductive logic that would contribute not only to math, but other subjects. • His method of reasoning is most apparent in Geometry and concrete things of that sort. • His ideas influenced Western methods of thinking and deduction.
Examples • Here are a few examples of things deducible by his method of reasoning. These are quoted from here. • “In a given circle equal chords form equal angles with the circumference of the circle” • “The angles at the base of an isosceles triangle are equal” • “The circle encompasses the greatest area for a given circumference” • “The external angles of a polygon equal 4 right angles” (Or 360°) • “The equal sides of an isosceles triangle are each greater than the altitude of the triangle drawn from the angle formed by the equal sides”
