Types of Honors Level Courses in NC Inherently Honors A D B C D LEA Locally Developed Honors Courses - use Honors Rubric for Local LEA review but not part of NCDPI Honors Portfolio review process Courses with a NCSCOS at a standard level that you also offer at an honors level … LEA Honors Portfolio Review /NCDPI Portfolio Review Inherently Honors (Standards written at a more rigorous and higher level) Honors By Proficiency (Arts & World Languages – higher levels are Inherently Honors)

  11. I. Curriculum Content How is the honors level course adapted and differentiated for advanced learners? How does the honors level curriculum support vertical alignment for college and career readiness? Honors Level Course Portfolio Evidence must include: • Teacher Rationale for Curriculum Content (intentional reflection & philosophy) • Standards and Objectives • Curriculum Plan (Pacing guides, course syllabus & sequence, curriculum maps, etc.)

  12. II. Instructional Materials and Methods How is the honors level course taught? Honors Level Course Portfolio Evidence must include: • Teacher Rationale for Instructional Materials and Methods • Instructional Materials and Methods (instructional resources, methods, strategies, equipment, and technology) • Sample Units, Lesson(s), and Assignments • Student Work Samples

  13. III. Assessment How is the Honors Level Course assessed? Honors Level Course Portfolio Evidence must include: • Teacher Rationale for Assessment Practices • Assessment Practices (grading practices, use of rubrics and/or scoring guides, use of formative and summative assessment) • Assessment Samples (pre-assessment, description of formative assessment, and summative assessment) • Student Work Assessment Samples

Timeline of LEA Cohort Selection for Portfolio Review Process • Random Selection of 1/3 of the LEAs yearly • Timeline – LEA undergoes honors portfolio review every 3 years • 2013-14 LEA Cohort was sent notification on April 25th from Dr. Rebecca Garland’s office via email to LEA Superintendents • 2013-14 Cohort is listed on the Wikispace

  18. Honors Portfolio Review Timeline • 2012-13: Transition year/first Cohort selected • 2013-2014: • Implementation of new Honors Rubric • First cohort portfolio submission & review • Second cohort noftified

  19. Honors Portfolio Review Timeline • 2014-15: • Second cohort portfolio submission & review • Third cohort notified • 2015-16 • Third cohort portfolio submission & review • Three year LEA review process begins again

Review Process - Electronic • NCDPI is developing a secure electronic submission process that will be ready for use by the LEAs in the fall, 2013. • The Honors Rubric may be used to start the honors portfolio process in the LEA • 2013-14 Cohort will receive specific instructions and support in the fall semester
